SECTION 2.4: VICE CITY IN GTA 6: THE RETURN, EXPLAINED
Vice City in GTA 6: The Return, Explained
Vice City is back as the main city of GTA 6: modern-day, not the ’80s. Rockstar’s official description calls it the “sun and fun capital of America” and names its flavor directly: the pastel art deco hotels and white sand of Ocean Beach, the panaderías of Little Cuba, the bootleg stalls of the Tisha-Wocka flea market, and the massive cruise harbor of the VC Port, all within Vice-Dale County, the game’s Miami-Dade.

Is it the same Vice City? GTA 6 vs the 2002 game
Same city, different decade, and a completely different job inside the game. The 2002 Vice City was frozen in 1986 and it was the map. GTA 6’s version is set today, and it’s one city inside the whole state of Leonida.
Everything else follows from that. Tommy Vercetti’s Vice City was two islands you could learn by heart in a weekend; this one is the dense core of a map that keeps going, with wetlands, keys, and highland regions sprawling around it.
What survives is the identity: art deco beachfront, neon after dark, and everyone on screen chasing money, fame, or both. The pastel suits and the synth radio are gone. The greed isn’t.
Confirmed districts & landmarks
The names above (Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, Tisha-Wocka flea market, VC Port, Vice-Dale County) come directly from Rockstar’s official descriptions, which is why we lead with them. Ocean Beach is the postcard: the Ocean Drive-style strip of pastel art deco hotels that both trailers open on, with fans matching individual buildings to real Miami Beach hotels almost one-for-one (an in-game “Boardwalk Hotel” among the spotted names: trailer analysis, not official).
Beyond the official set, community mapping projects have assigned further district names (South Beach, Washington Beach, Little Haiti, Downtown, Vice Point, an international airport) reconstructed from footage. Plausible, often convincing, but not Rockstar’s words, so we label them as fan mapping until confirmed. Nostalgia hunters have also spotted apparent callbacks to the 2002 game in early clips, including Ocean View Hotel signage: the kind of Easter egg Rockstar loves. Every district or landmark that goes official lands in our everything-we-know log the day it’s confirmed.
What changed since 2002
Three real shifts. The satire updated its targets: the original skewered ’80s excess; the trailers point squarely at today’s: influencer culture, livestreams, reality-TV chaos on the beach. The scale inverted: Vice City went from being the map to being the crown of one, which changes how it plays: a dense urban core you leave and return to rather than a world you exhaust. And the detail level is generational: the beachfront crowds, working storefronts, and street life shown in footage are the densest Rockstar has ever put on screen. What didn’t change is the thesis: Vice City remains the place where American glamour and American hustle share a sidewalk.
The 2002 game built that identity on its radio dial. What is actually known about the sequel’s soundtrack, and what is not, is on our GTA 6 music page.

FAQ
Is Vice City in GTA 6? Yes, it’s the main city, the centerpiece of Leonida, rebuilt from scratch for the modern day. Officially named areas include Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the VC Port, and the Tisha-Wocka flea market.
Is GTA 6’s Vice City the same map as the 2002 game? No, same city, rebuilt from scratch, not a remaster. The 2002 map was two islands and it was the whole game; this one is a single city inside the state of Leonida.
Is GTA 6’s Vice City set in the ’80s like the original? No. Rockstar’s description opens with “we’re a long way from the ’80s”: this Vice City is contemporary. The neon survives; the decade doesn’t.
Is Vice City based on Miami? Completely, it sits in Vice-Dale County, the game’s Miami-Dade, and fans have matched dozens of trailer buildings to real Miami landmarks.
