SECTION 1.6: GTA 6 FILE SIZE: WILL IT FIT ON YOUR CONSOLE?
GTA 6 File Size: Will It Fit on Your Console?
Rockstar has not announced GTA 6’s file size yet. Credible estimates, based on Red Dead Redemption 2 (~150GB) and GTA 5’s current footprint, land between 150GB and 200GB at launch. Our advice: clear 250GB of free space before November 12 to cover the install, the day-one patch, and decompression headroom. This page will be updated the moment Rockstar confirms the number.
Last updated: August 3, 2026. Install size is an expected range, not official. All storage figures below are verified console specs.
| Console | Usable space (approx.) | With a ~200GB install |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (825GB, launch) | ≈667GB | Fits, but eats ~30% of your drive |
| PS5 Slim / Digital (1TB) | ≈848GB | Comfortable, if your library is trimmed |
| PS5 Pro (2TB) | ≈1.86TB | No problem |
| Xbox Series X (1TB) | ≈802GB | Fits, with a trimmed library |
| Xbox Series S (512GB) | ≈364GB | Over half the drive: plan an upgrade |
Expected install size: what we know
As of July 2026, the honest answer is a labeled estimate. The serious projections converge on 150-200GB for the base install on PS5 and Series X, plus a day-one patch typically in the 15-30GB range, which is why we recommend a 250GB buffer rather than the raw install figure. The logic: Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped at roughly 150GB, GTA 5 has grown to around 90-105GB, and GTA 6’s world and asset quality point well past both.
Two viral numbers deserve a debunk: the “320GB” figure traces back to a deleted, uncited social post, and the “676.7GB Xbox confirmation” was a joke image. Neither has any official basis. What Rockstar has done is telling, though: the entire launch is built around pre-loading: even the boxed copy is a download code arriving November 12 specifically so buyers can pre-load. You don’t architect a launch around a week of pre-loading for a small file.
How to check your free space
On PS5: Settings → Storage → Console Storage. The bar shows what games and apps are using; sort by size to find the space hogs.
On Xbox: press the Xbox button → My games & apps → Manage → and check the storage devices panel, or Settings → System → Storage devices.
Do this now, not launch week: if the math is tight, the fix below takes ten minutes.
Read this before you buy an SSD
Storage is in the middle of a price spike, and it is not a normal one. A global shortage of memory and NAND components (driven largely by AI data-centre demand) has pushed NVMe drives well above their 2024 prices, and genuine discounts have become rare. Microsoft put a number on it when it raised console prices worldwide on August 1, 2026: component costs up more than 2.5x in a year, with another doubling expected by late 2027. That increase has landed: Xbox hardware is $100 to $150 dearer than it was in July, and the pressure behind it has not eased.
What that means for you, practically:
- Do not wait for a Black Friday or launch-week sale. In a shortage, the sale price this November may sit above today’s regular price. If you know you need the space, buying now is the safer play.
- Ignore any price you read in an older guide. A lot of “best PS5 SSD” articles still quote 2024 numbers. Check the live price before you commit.
- Buy the capacity you actually need, not the biggest one. A 1TB drive covers GTA 6 plus a working library.

Every drive below exceeds Sony’s requirements (M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 4, 5,500MB/s+ sequential reads). A heatsink is mandatory: buy a model that includes one, or add one that fits the slot.
| Drive | Sweet spot | Why this one | Expected price range (July 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| WD Black SN850P | 1TB / 2TB | Officially Sony-licensed, factory heatsink, zero compatibility doubt | $130-260 |
| WD Black SN850X | 1TB / 2TB | The value pick if you don’t need the licensing, heatsink versions available | $110-290 |
| Samsung 990 Pro | 1TB / 2TB | Fastest Gen 4 drive tested, priced accordingly right now | $130-370 |
| Crucial T500 / P310 | 1TB | Budget entry that still clears Sony’s spec | $100-175 |
These ranges are our own observations, taken across several major US retailers in July 2026 and spanning 1TB to 2TB capacities. They are not Amazon prices and they are not live prices. The current price of any drive above is whatever its product page shows when you open it, and in this shortage those prices move weekly. Always check the live listing before you buy.
Installation is a five-minute job: power off, slide the side panel, remove the expansion slot cover, insert the drive, one screw, done. The PS5 formats it on next boot. No technical skill required: Sony designed the expansion slot for exactly this. If you’re buying a whole console anyway, factor storage into the choice: our best console for GTA 6 guide covers which models give you room to breathe.
Xbox storage options
Xbox Series X|S games can only run from internal storage or the official Storage Expansion Cards (Seagate, and WD Black C50). They plug into the back (no tools, no installation), but the proprietary format costs more per gigabyte than PS5’s open M.2 slot, and the same component shortage is pushing card prices up. Series S owners have the least room and the most to gain: a 1TB card turns a 364GB squeeze into a non-issue for launch. Worth noting if you are also buying the console: Xbox hardware prices went up on August 1, 2026, so a Series S plus a 1 TB card is a steeper total than it was a fortnight ago. Check the current console prices before you plan the budget.
How to free space fast
Uninstall your biggest finished games first: your saves are safe (cloud and console backups) and anything can be reinstalled later. Clear old capture videos, which quietly eat tens of gigabytes. And if you own an external USB drive, use it as free cold storage: move games you’re not playing onto it, then transfer them back when needed instead of redownloading.
Storage sorted? The rest of your launch prep (editions, preorders, hardware) is in the GTA 6 buying guide.
FAQ
Can I play GTA 6 from an external drive? No. PS5 games only run from internal or M.2 storage, and Series X|S games only from internal storage or official expansion cards. External USB drives can store the game, not run it.
How big was GTA 5? Roughly 87GB on PS5 and 76GB on PS4 today, after years of updates. RDR2 sits near 150GB. GTA 6’s expected 150-200GB would be Rockstar’s biggest launch install ever.
Why are SSDs so expensive right now? A global memory and NAND shortage. Microsoft raised Xbox prices on August 1, 2026, citing storage and memory costs up more than 2.5x in a year and another doubling expected by late 2027. Discounts have become rare across the category.
Do I need to preload GTA 6? You should. Pre-loading opens November 12 for digital and boxed copies alike. For a file this size, starting the download on launch day could cost you hours: clear space early and download on the 12th.
