Which edition are people actually buying? According to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is currently outpacing the $79.99 base edition in pre-orders, though he notes early pre-orders skew toward the most avid fans. (As of August 2026.)

What’s inside each edition?

Both editions contain the same thing at their core: the full Jason and Lucia story, the complete state of Leonida, and every free update Rockstar releases later. Nothing story-critical is locked behind Ultimate.

The Ultimate Edition adds a set of exclusive single-player content threaded across the campaign: five vehicles (including the ’95 Grotti Cheetah), three weapons, five exclusive customization shops, two extra side missions, and additional apparel and cosmetics for both characters. Most of it unlocks as you progress through the story chapters rather than all at once, so it feels built into the game rather than dumped on you at the start.

Is the Ultimate Edition worth $20 more?

It comes down to how you play. GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience, and the Ultimate content is single-player content: extra cars, shops, cosmetics, and activities, not an online head start. So the online angle you might remember from GTA V’s editions does not apply here.

If you are the kind of player who spends an hour in a character creator, collects and customizes every car, and wants to see every shop and side activity on a first playthrough, the $20 is good value: five shops and two dedicated side missions is more than most deluxe editions offer. If you are here mainly for the story and the map, the Standard Edition already gives you everything that matters, and you can add the rest later.

Can you upgrade from Standard to Ultimate later?

Yes, and this is the single most important fact on this page. Rockstar has confirmed that Standard Edition owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately, at any time, from their console store. The upgrade is expected to cost around $20 (the same as the gap between editions), though Rockstar has not yet pinned the exact number, and it should be available at or shortly after the November 19 launch.

What this means in practice: there is no pressure to decide now. Start with Standard, play the game, and if you find you want the extra shops and vehicles, upgrade for roughly the same $20 you would have paid up front. Starting small costs you nothing.

One warning about the “physical” edition

The boxed version of GTA 6 ships with a download code, not a disc. You will need to download the full game and have an internet connection either way: a boxed copy does not save you the download or let you install offline. Boxes ship from November 12, the same day digital pre-load opens. If a code on your shelf still has value to you, the boxed Standard is fine; just go in knowing there is no disc.
